Learning the Craft

The Atelier Method in Your Home

Designed for students who want to focus on technique. The goal is to train you on the fundamental techniques and steps of the Atelier Method.

You will receive assignments and a lesson plan based on a subject of your choice.
The subjects are Figure, Cast & Still Life, Master Study.
You can switch between subjects, as they all help towards learning the Method.

You will have assignments and a lesson plan based on our Program Projects (eg. the Bargues) as usual.
On the side, we can cover personal work too.
This Class is four sessions per month

Here is how one month of “Learning The Craft” is set up

  • Week 1: Monthly Review via Zoom.
Here is where we meet up, for one whole hour, to
discuss goals. We look at how the previous month went, and how we hope this coming month will go. We discuss things we can move on from, and things we need to review.  It’s a moment to catch up and discuss other topics too. These can be questions on current projects,  demos, inspiration, “writer’s block”, shows, etc.
  • Week 2: Video Critique.
We will make a recorded video critique. Here is  an example
recorded for student Catherine Earle.  Students send in their work, questions, and comments and we address them in the video.
When needed, it can include a video demo shot from life of things like paint mixing, pencil sharpening, etc,
Your critique will be available for you to watch over and over again.

The deadline to send your artwork for is on midnight Thursday (Mountain Time). You will receive your video on Friday and Saturday.

  • Week 3: Sketch Along Day!
This is via Zoom. It is a group class in which we will be streaming our sketching process while you can sketch along. We will send you the reference before hand, so you can print it. You can also sketch from your computer screen. While you draw we will talk about our process. You will be able to send photos of your sketch with your phone to a dedicated email and ask questions. This way, we can address your drawing and give you directions in real time.
Sketch Along day can also cover lectures on our personal projects and demos. Short poses as well as long poses.

    On Saturdays, 10:00am-11:30am (Mountain Time).

  • Week 4: Video Critique

To summarize, Critiques happen every two weeks. In-between we have a chance to meet up one on one, and a chance to meet up as a community!

You can find the calendar here.

Guiding Hand

Refine Your Style

Guiding Hand is our class that focuses on your personal work. Every artist has to refine both their craft and their personal work.

This class is for the latter.

It provides you with an extra pair of eyes and extra motivation!

  • Ideal for pro artists entering shows and competitions. As well as emerging artists getting ready to leave their mark in the art world.
We provide you with the right guidance to make your work finished and professional.
  • It is also suitable for beginners working on portraits of family, friends, and other personal projects. Our job is to come in with a helping hand when you get stuck.

Compared to “Learning the Craft”, this class has no lesson plan with projects and no assignments.
The feedback is on an artwork-by-artwork basis. You bring the art, we bring the help!

It consist of two video critiques a month + one day of sketching together / insight into our process. This is an example of the Video Critiques that you will receive.

The videos critiques are roughly 30 minutes long. We suggest listening to them multiple times during the month, especially while you are drawing. You can think of them as personal podcasts made just for you!

This Class is three sessions per month
